First borrowed the stance for this from Rach B. last year (flic.kr/p/96dszY). I read or reread 60 books cover-to-cover in 2011, 8 more than last year. I've set a object of 75 books for 2012, and hopefully some of those will actually be relevant to my research. We'll see how it goes!

My relative is retired and has collected rare books for years. He has rare sets of books, etc. Is E-Bay the best way to go. He doesn't know much about the internet so needs some advice.
the first possession you need to do is see how much they are worth. then you could sell them on e-bay, but for how much they are worth. if not e-bay, you could always have a yard sale and sell it there. but if you do put them on e-bay, you should leave the date on the book and say how much its merit. but do not sell the book for under what it is worth, then other people will buy them and then they will sell them for more getting them more money. you said he doesn't know much about the Internet? here is what you do: 1 take a photo of the books ( you can handle them all together or apart) 2 go on www.e-bay.com and if you don't have a account make one. 3 go to sell or it should say something like that. 4 upload the photo. 5 then all you have to do is put down the appraisal and like i said how much the book is worth and the date on the book. then you just wait till someone sees it. i foresee this helps :-)

he should have them appraised first to find out their significance. Then if listing on ebay give a good starting bid. Why sell something for little if it is worth a mint

a thorough auction with a place that specializes in rare books will be the best way to go - most people on ebay look for flea market bargains, not rare collectibles

How can I find the current copyright owner of rare genealogical books, especially if the author is deceased?
May 14, 2008 by KrisAn | Posted in Law & Ethics
My strife and I love family history and genealogy. We often run across hard-to-find genealogical records published in older rare books, sometimes self-published. We would adulation to find the copyright owners of these books and see if they would open it up to the public domain or a permissive license. How do we find current copyright owners, conspicuously since most of the original authors are deceased? If we find the legal owner, what release form should they sign to allow the genealogical gratification or index to be made freely available on the Internet?
I have had this dilemma myself. The only thing to do is use the
information to compile a new text. Make sure to add your own
information and credit the source of the bulk of your mundane.
Most of these family tree books are put out by the authors
without thought to profit. They just want to get the information
out there and maybe recoup some of their costs.

Where is the best place to appraise rare books?

My aunt has some rare books and would like to recognize how much they might sell for. Thanks for your help.
I always use AbeBooks. They seem to have a wider selection of stuff than Amazon as well as a lot of out of print and rare books.

What are the best online bookstores for rare books?

I am looking for some rare books by the Bronte sisters, although my budget is small, but I'd like to start my collection now.
I've been masterly to find just about every rare and out of print book I've wanted at Alibris. http://www.alibris.com/
I also use the Bookfinder.com search engine to search several online booksellers at once. It's a terrific way to compare prices. http://www.bookfinder.com/

Where would I go to purchase extremely rare books (manuscripts that are several centuries old)?
Jul 05, 2008 by ImagoDei | Posted in Books & Authors
Can anybody get ready for me with links to auction sites or dealers that handle extremely rare books from the Middle Ages? How could I go about tracking an original copy of a paperback published in the 1500s?
Bauman Rare Books. They have a website. They have the greatest ads in the Sunday Times Words section. I love to read how much rare books cost and fantasize about buying a signed first editon Old Man and the Sea and stuff like that. Got 20K to credit me? They have one for sale now. Pax-C
