Much of it was quickly based on the experiences of the authors in WWI. The combat experiences changed who the writers were even when they weren't writing about combat.
For case, Earnest Hemingway based "A Farewell to Arms" on a relationship he had with an American nurse while wounded. "All Still on the Western Front" was written by a German WWI veteran.
The impact of the post war cultural and political exchanges (and turmoil) that resulted from the war also assumed even those who did not go (e.g. The Great Gatsby, by F Scott Fitzgerald.)
