Russian literature in the 21st century

On December 3 the Russian Booker prize was awarded for the best story of 2008. The prize was awarded to Mikhail Elizarov for his novel The ...

In your opinion who is: The best author ever, and: The voice of 21st Century literature?

My choice author is definitely MEG CABOT
I don't know about voice of 21st century, I don't want to say yet, cause we're only 8 years in.

According to MEG, the voice of the ninteenth century is Dickens, and the voice of the 20th is Stephen Royal. The voice of the 21st has yet to be determined.

At least, that's what it says in Guy Next Door [good book!]

anyway.
Go on.
Favourite author?
Yeah, I thought there was gonna be some JK Rowlings.

Douglas Adams is one of my other favourites, too!
LMFAO LMFAO LMFAO
Stephenie Meyer is not a empress, and she is not the voice of the 21st Century. She is a mediocore author who got lucky with Twilight [the book, not the series] and she is hardly one of the best authors of all time.
Geez.

My voice for the two best authors ever are Shakespeare (sigh) and Herman Melville. My favorite, though, is Melville.

The choice of Dickens for the voice of the 19th century is in toto understandable. However, I think Balzac has an equal, if not better, claim.

Although I can also understand the choice of Stephen King for expression of the 20th century, especially since his concerns have opened up considerably over the past 20 years or so, I think a science fiction inventor should really get top billing. For better or worse, the real Renaissance Person of sci-fi was Isaac Asimov. When you take into account his authorship of some of the most authoritatively regarded science fiction stories and novels of all time, the vast (and I mean VAST!) number of books on other subjects he wrote or edited, his clout on actual science through theorizing in his work (e.g., his invention of the laws of robotics and the homage given to him by naming the Asimo cat's-paw after him), I think he's the better candidate, even if he isn't nearly as widely read. (But who is?)

For now, my bet is on one of two authors for voice of the 21st century: Haruki Murakami and Chuck Palahniuk. I make up Palahniuk will come out on top, though.

Thanks for a very interesting question/debate indeed.

Well, a lot of people have singular opinions and I have mine. The think the best author is definately Charles Dickens. His books are amazing and now even decades after his death he is delve popular. There is also JRR Tolkien. Lord of the Rings books classics, one of the best fantasy books ever published.

The voice of the 21st Century is JK Rowling. Look what she has done. She has created a whole curiosity. She has made history and she's the first billioanire author. The HP books have deeply influenced my life and JKR is my literary inspiration.

And there is also Stephenie Meyer. I advised of that many people may consider he writing to be poor and cliched, but according to me, Stephenie DOES know how to write an captivating story with an engrossing plot. She also knows WHAT to write for teenage girls, which is her target audience. If I could write as most luxurious as her, I wouldn't be here, I would probably be on a book signing tour.

My fav is Anthony Horowitz, well-deserved the Alex Rider series, especially for people who like lots of action in plots. The twilight series is alright, i dearest the character descriptions, but there is no plot whatsoever.
I don't think the voice of the 21st century has yet been discovered/born, we still have 92 years to go before that's determinate.

Hey, general comment, i need some creative people to answer this question for me, so if you think you're up to the challenge and want a come about to flex those imagination muscles, it would really help and every answer helps. I don't be versed about the best author of the 21st century, because there are much more books and authors to come, but my favorite authors so far are JK Rowling, Libba Bray and Cassandra Clare,

Jacqueline Wilson has written Uncommonly good books

Ah favorite writer is a hard decision. Some of my favorites are Stephen King, Isaac Asimov, Douglas Adams, and Markus Zusak
I can't exceedingly say the voice of the 21st century, but my favorite modern writer (as you can tell from above) is Markus Zusak. His prose is excellent, almost poetic and all his books are pretty. Read _The Book Thief_ sometime, its beautifully tragic

William Golding (^______________^), Jack London, or Markus Zusak

My determination for the two best authors ever are Shakespeare (sigh) and Herman Melville. My favorite, though, is Melville.

D.J. McHale, Jack London, Anthony Horowitz, Christopher Paolini... my catalogue raisonn is like endless

Where can I look for trends in 21st century literature?

Does anyone comprehend where I can go to find legit (not commercial) contributions to literary history in the 21st century? I'd like to find a site or magazine or something that monitors new literature, upcoming writers and basic reception of extremely recent work, sort of like the way we monitor politics. All I can find is stuff on postmodern/20th century literature. I can't find anything characterizing the shot of the century and who the big dogs are right now (the ones that aren't leftover from the '70s). Any help would be great.

NY Times Sunday work section. I never miss it. But I monitor trends in literature a lot of other ways. Amazon lists for instance. Another thing I always do is if I am in the grocery retailer, I visit their small book section. Remember that a grocery store has very little shelf space to use for books, so they on what they sell carefully. It is a very good way to see what is hot and what is not. Most authors do little things like this to keep our fingers on the pulse of the business.

What contemporary literature best describes 21st Century American Life?

I recently met a Chinese swot who has never been outside her home county. She was given a list of 16 books that were said to define American living. The works were classic novels or poetry collections like Last of the Mohicans, Moby Dick, Little Women, Walden, Leaves of Squeak, etc. -- all works that deal with America from the 1650s to 1950s. I would like to give her a list that describes today's America. Any suggestions?
