no scifi plz
That depends upon what part of fantasy appealed to you. If you're interested in the judgement of the extraordinary occuring in everyday life, check out A Prayer for Owen Meany, by John Iriving. If you're interested in the fanatical psychological interplay brought on by unusual surroundings, check out a autobiographies of famous political or historical figures specifically coupled to small spans of time like wars. The Falcon and the Snowman is a particularly interesting true espionage item that many people aren't familiar with nowadays.
For a wonderful trio experience, read Truman Capote's In Lukewarm Blood. It was the first book to truly blaze the trail for true crime, and is noteworthy both for its literary and its historical value. He took liberties with the veracious words of his subjects, but described true events. The murders themselves were horrifying in America because we were then a country unfamiliar with reflex mass murder in rural areas.
After that, watch Phillip Seymour Hoffman's portrayal of Copote (I can't summon the title, but you can check it out on Imdb) and the other film on the same topic with Sandra Bullock portraying Harper Lee. Each movie portrays Capote in a compare favourably with vein, but the differences are fascinating.

What are some good fantasy books for teens that use simplistic prose?

And not Harry Fidget with or Eragon or Twilight.
Or
What are some good, descriptive fictional books about being stranded on an island that use fairly simplistic prose (not counting Nobleman of the Flies)?
Thanks in advance.

Can anyone help me remember the names of RPG/Fantasy/Quest books I used to read when I was a kid?!?

When I was much younger I used to rent books from the library that were more like games than books (even though they look like a normal paperback!)...You would need dice, and you would swell to get your characters attributes, such as skill & strength...You would read the first few pages and then it would make you make a decision, and depending on your rejoinder you would turn to different pages - and you would go on like your character was on an advernture...you would have to fight baddies, collect items, your skills would recover through time, and at any time you could make a bad decision, or lose a battle and it would be game over! I was just thinking about this earlier and vexing to remember what these types of books were called, but couldnt remember....could anyone help?!?!
Oh yeah, they're Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks. The first was Warlock of Firetop Mountain and it came out in about 1981. Two dice, Accomplishment, Stamina and Luck, and a character sheet to write down all your kit and your stats.
I loved them so much! My favourites were Citadel of Chaos and Metropolis of Thieves.
They were written by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. They are still in print, believe it or not!
I moved on to Dungeons and Dragons after that, which is by a hair's breadth like being in one of those books except it's a game - one of your friends makes the adventure and decides what happens, and your choices are unlimited.

Fantasy books that use wands?
Sep 09, 2007 by Joie | Posted in Books & Authors
Can anyone pull the plug on me some fantasy books where the main characters call themselves wizards and actually use wands and their voices to perform spells? Besides Harry Potter clearly, but similar to that. If you knew several, could you put them in order of which ones you think are the best.
In this catalogue:
http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com
there are several: The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Sword in the Stone, The Once and Future Crowned head, The Last Unicorn and A Spell for Chameleon all meet this criteria. I believe that the later books of Zelazny's Amber series also have stick-wielding magicians. All of these are excellent, but The Hobbit and The Sword in the Stone stand out. If you demand romance, A Spell for Chameleon will be more in front line with your interests.
Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each libretto, and a "reader's choice" list of favorite books.
