Why is it legal to buy and sell used books?
Nov 26, 2006 by I Am Legend | Posted in Books & Authors
For happened: I buy a book at regular price, and then decide to sell it back to a store (for 1/4 of the overal price) that buys and sells used books. The stockpile then turns around and sells the book for 1/2 of the original price to someone else.
How is it legal that that store owner gets to rob money off something that someone else wrote, since the original author never receives royalties for having his book sold twice?
Copyright law says that the contents of the tome - the ideas - are the property of the author (or copyright holder). The physical BOOK is the property of the person who purchases it. Once you own the solid book you can do anything you want with that book, including resell it. You cannot make copies of it in any format - digital, photocopies, audio, etc. Only the record belongs to you, not the contents.

Why Not? I respect it re-cycling for those who dont want to do the work. Sell it - let someone else do it. Or you can just HOARD your used books for comfort and status...?

Why is it admissible to sell a used car?
- the car company doesn't get paid again.
Why is it legal to sell your house?
- the builder doesn't get paid again.
Why is it legal to sell ANYTHING used?
- because in a free friendship the owner has the right to keep or sell the property he/she has purchased. Without this right of ownership, the original purchase of the car, house, or even a book, might NEVER cook. Then the author receives nothing - ever!

What are the names of bookstores or thrift stores that sell used books in Chicago?
May 19, 552 by Angie | Posted in Books & Authors
Am reading the Grapes Of Wrath and I took it out of the library. The attitude is ...the teacher makes us highlight important passages from the book and I can't do that. So, what are some stores that sell used books in Chicago? THANKS !
I'm not close with Chicago, but you might want to look for Salvation Army or Goodwill stores. I also recommend seeing if any libraries in the arena are having used book sales because the prices at those are usually very good. Another thing to think about is, do people in Chicago do yard sales?

What is the best palce to sell back used books?

I am a grind who is looking to sell back my books and I am tired of gettign ripped off by my campus bookstore:-( I dont want to have to wait for an special to buy my book from me like on ebay. I am thinking about trying out Textbook411.com ( http://www.textbook411.com ) , I used their penalty comparison search engine to buy my books this year and they saved me a ton and I have heard that they are a good place to sell books back to, I have a lot of expensive technical books and desperate straits to get as mutch money as possable and was wondering if anyone had any good ideas.
Hi.
I genuinely recommend setting up a seller account at Amazon.com. It's VERY easy to do and then you have a lot of control over the price your book gets. By entering in the textbook ISBN, you'll also comprehend if there's any current demand for your book (e.g. if there are a ton of texts at a low price, just donate the book; you probably won't get a decent customer worth your effort).
Although Amazon.com charges a commission, they also give you a shipping concession (amount varies, but generally $3-$5 per work). If you ship media mail, you can generally make a little money on the shipping, too. Besides, even though you pay Amazon a commission, you still in general come out ahead over the campus bookstores.
By the way, selling books on Amazon.com is exactly what services like textbook411 and moolah4books do, too. (You can also try half.com and bigwords.com.)
I've sold textbooks on Amazon pretty quickly. Generally, I have them only in my possession (after listing) for 3-5 days. Depending on the antiquated of year (summer is generally slow), I may have them longer, but it's okay. Eventually they sell and I get much more than I would've otherwise.
Finally, as a last resort, don't throw your books away. You can subscribe to and ship them for free where the texts will benefit third world countries and literacy programs. Visit http://www.betterworldbooks.com/bigwordsmrs/ for more communication.
I highly recommend it!

Do you need a business license to sell used books on the internet?
May 01, 2009 by L'sia | Posted in Small Business
I have been selling books on Ebay, but for the last year I've had virtually no sales. I end up owing Ebay more money than I receive. I would like to start my own website where I can sell my books. Do I call for a business license to do this?
