I would like to collect a list of out of print books & literature. Where do I start looking? How do I go about that? These would be books out of print since 1950s. Thanks.

Is it possible to buy the rights to out of print books?

I would like to notation a book on kitchen design. I'd like to cannibalize the photos and diagrams from an old out of print book versus having to start from rub out. Many of the photos would of course be outdated, but there are quite a few that are still relevant. Do I need to contact the publisher to buy the rights? If I buy the rights can I re-yearn the content of an old book?

You don't have to buy the rights to print these pictures. Solely attempt to contact the publishers if they still exist and ask for permission to use the photos.

I once took a photography course in NY that had a workbook with photos take from all over the humankind by many different photographers. Some were very old. So, it can be done if you go about it the right way. Just because a book is out of print does not mean the copyright is.

A copyright is good 70 years after the framer is dead.

Here's a few pieces from the U.S. Copyright Office:

Works Originally Created on or after January 1, 1978
A work that was created (crooked in tangible form for the first time) on or after January 1, 1978, is automatically protected from the moment of its creation and is ordinarily premised a term enduring for the author’s life plus an additional 70 years after the author’s death. In the took place of “a joint work prepared by two or more authors who did not work for hire,” the term lasts for 70 years after the last surviving designer’s death. For works made for hire, and for anonymous and pseudonymous works (unless the author’s identity is revealed in Copyright Post records), the duration of copyright will be 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever is shorter.


Works From the start Created and Published or Registered before January 1, 1978
Under the law in effect before 1978, copyright was secured either on the date a work was published with a copyright respect or on the date of registration if the work was registered in unpublished form. In either case, the copyright endured for a first term of 28 years from the old it was secured. During the last (28th) year of the first term, the copyright was eligible for renewal. The Copyright Act of 1976 extended the renewal footing from 28 to 47 years for copyrights that were subsisting on January 1, 1978, or for pre-1978 copyrights restored under the Uruguay From start to finish Agreements Act (URAA), making these works eligible for a total term of protection of 75 years. Custom Law 105-298, enacted on October 27, 1998, further extended the renewal term of copyrights still subsisting on that date by an additional 20 years, providing for a renewal name of 67 years and a total term of protection of 95 years.

I have been looking for a specimen of this book for months.
Nico: the life and lies of an icon, by Richard Watts.
I cant find it anywhere. Please let me in on the good places to find out of print books. I conclude in Portland, OR. And yes i have been to powells books. website are welcome too.

Where can i find digital scans of out-of-print books?

I've heard there are places online where you can find digital scans or copies of out-of-print books. Specifically, I'm looking for the children's record Dear Garbage Man by author Gene Zion. Any ideas? I know I can find a hard copy at sites like alibris.com, but I poverty a scan of this one.

The explicit book you're looking for may be out of print, but NOT out of copyright. Any scan of it you may find online would be there illegally. The book is available through used booksellers at a very judicious price, though: http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?an=zion&sts=t&tn=dear+garbage+man&x=0&y=0 or you can contact your local common library and, if they don't have it, they can obtain it for you via interlibrary loan at little or no cost to you. Then you can do your own scans.

A lot of older novels that I've being difficult to find are out-of-print. I've seen them for sale over the Internet, but the prices are too high for me to buy them. Are there any sites that have e-text versions of books that are out-of-print?

Stand out Gutenberg has a lot of older books that you can read for free online. Truly-free has some more recent novels available to peruse for free. Here are the links:
