Got any pointers for leveling books on Fountas & Pinnell Guided Reading scale?
Oct 22, 2007 by umlando | Posted in Teaching
I created a primary worksheet for the levels A-M, but it's highly subjective, and Fountas & Pinnell don't give any milestones for levels N-S.
1 - If you level K-5 books, what to you do about the subjectivity of GR levels A-M and the insufficiency of guidance on N-S?
2 - If you have a more detailed reference work than Guided Reading, by Fountas & Pinnell, please tell me the title and designer so I can buy it, too.
Thanks in advance.

I was a Literacy Prepare and Reading Specialist for many years, so, yes, I can help answer some of your questions and help you set up the book pots you will be using.
I be sure it seems confusing right now. Levels N-S are not so important for you as the students reading those levels can already read somewhat. Don't worry so much about those students, nothing but let interest be the guide for those readers. That is often what challenges them.
I really don't know why the publishers don't pre-level the books. It would be so much more helpful.
If you can, concentrate on the lower reading levels. Form 1 is level A-I (or levels 1-16 with other publishers). The numbers and letters are different because publishers don't want legal problems, but they are generally the same thing.
I use book pots with books of the same level together. Get a librarian from the class who would like to help you keep things straight. I have had kids support me who could level books better than I could!
If you have students who are reading levels A-M, a lot of time should be spent with those students in reading groups. Large problems they experience will lead you to do a lesson for that group on some phonics lesson or a comprehension lesson. Reading groups for the raise readers may start a novel that you can all read together, such as Hatchet, which I did last year with my better readers in Grade 3.
Remember that leveling books is personal and don't get too hung up on this. It's just a tool to help you organize things.
Also, I use book pots with genre books as well which students can present. I put a box of those on each set of desks and rotate them the next week. That way kids have some exposure to Fairy Tales, Biography, Science, Reptiles, or series books such as The Cheap House books, etc. This is not scientific either, but kids like looking at those books for fifteen minutes in the morning.
I try to spend some time with individual kids to restrain whether the books are at their reading level.....we use the "Five Finger Rule" to determine if the books can be read independently....(if they can't skim five words on the first page, the book is probably too hard.) if all the books one child picks are too hard, just work on reminding them about the Five Have the upper hand over Rule.
I do hope this helps you somewhat!

Is it true there are ways to create your own computer game based on digital pictures you provide?
Apr 27, 2009 by Poyzin | Posted in Video & Online Games
Norm, you might take 20 composite digital pictures of your room and the software can basically stitch them together to create your virtual 3-D reside, with every single detail (even that crumb from your donut and the pencil laying on your desk).
You can then play a game as if you're the size of an ant or spider, climbing on your tome or scaling up the side of your computer etc.
I think i read about this, unless i was hallucinating.
well if you can im ineluctable your going to need quite a bit of money. but with advances in technology im sure you can.

Are there electromagnetic devices that can send waves that shock and rearrange the human brain order?
Nov 25, 2006 by philipentertain | Posted in Psychology
There was a reserve I read on Self Hypnotism, years ago. I do not remember the author. However, the book had a black cover and titled the same. The indisputable few pages of this book had details of such devices in reality that could send shcok waves from one country to another and can de-arrange the disquieted arrangement of a human brain. The person subjected to such shocks could become dysfunctional or as good as an infant in an adult richness! The reason the Big countries don't use these devices is simply because many countries have developed these simple yet powerful devices on a large scale. Therefore, like atomic bombs and chemical warfare, leads to chaos. In other words, it is just a matter of who does it first. But ultimately everyone could use it against each other and we would proceed no winner. However, the question still remains, Do these devices really exist???
Called "TV" a marriage of Greek and Latin terms that shows there were scrambled thoughts at the very beginning.
