Where do the old edition books go?

Some medical books, those are disgrace new but unsold books; where do the pulishers sale those books?
I don't discern about medical books, but I used to work in travel guides, specifically Fodor's. We never remaindered our old editions--we always had them destroyed. This was not because we feared cannibalizing sales of new editions but because we felt that the poop changed during the update could make a difference between someone having a great time on their trip and the opposite. It is very fun to look back at old books and see what happened over all at once. The only way to find copies of older volumes would be to check used book sellers. Many used book dealers will search for older editions for you. If you have a individual to book in mind, you could also contact the publisher directly--try the editorial office and hope to get the ear of a sympathetic young opinion piece assistant who may help you out of the goodness of his/her heart. Good luck!

Maybe they do not. After all, they would good cannibalize sales of new editions. But you can search amazon.com and alibris.com to find used ones.

They stock them at discount to whoever will buy them. This includes the local paper recyclers...

Where can I get old/first edition books by John Steinbeck?
Sep 03, 2006 by Carole | Posted in Books & Authors
Yes, yes, I be versed about Ebay. I'm looking for particular dealers that you may have bought things from and trust.
I commonly rely on
http://abebooks.com
In this case they have 54 copies of John Steinbeck books, first editions with dust jackets, that radius from $5,000 to $30,000; these include Grapes of Wrath, Red Pony, Tortilla Flat, Of Mice and Men, Winter of Our Discontentment, and others.
On the other hand, they list 4482 as first edition hardbacks. I would be suspicious of most of these. Some are not really first editions but reprints; some are first editions, but not first printing; some do not have djs or are not in very adept condition. Some of them are not even old.
However, there are more than 1000 copies priced between $25 and $50, and some of these appear to be genuine first edition hardbacks, maybe even with djs and in obedient condition. So you might find just what you are looking for.
Before purchasing through abebooks, I always ask the dealer to verify that the book is a first edition, first printing, and if possible I ask for a photograph. Almost all dealers will let you revert a copy if you are not satisfied, but some will expect you to pay the shipping costs both ways. You can determine that also before you order. If you're lucky, there will be abebooks dealers near to where you living that have what you are looking for.
Other online groups of dealers are

and

Information luck! I hope you find what you're looking for.

How is the best way to store old books?
Apr 08, 2007 by fran | Posted in Books & Authors
I have four old first edition books from 1920's (winnie the pooh), I stand in want to put them away for my 13 year old daughter till she is old enough to appreciate them, how is the best way to store them?
Wrap them in brown deed and store them in a dark and very dry cupboard is the best way. It's important that you keep them out of the sun.

Where can I find the value of my OLD books and what does Preface to first edition mean?
Sep 06, 2007 by jtl22002 | Posted in Books & Authors
I have two very old books. I have been searching for more then a year to find a consider to take them to find their value. They are both published by Belford & Clark Co. One is Miltons Poems - 1886 I don't know if that was the copyright date or the stamp date. The other is Scott's Poems and there is no date on this one. It just says Preface to first edition. I had another but my son got into it and ripped it all up. (I thank my tranquillize for having SUCH a close eye on him while I was gone) Please help I find all kinds of books but none of them look like the ones I have....oh yeah and they are in Ton condition.....as far as I can tell and I am no expert.
Several years ago we had a obliteration in the family. The person had a lot of stuff, and we hired professional appraisers to value some of it. Can't give one relative a plate worth $5 and another one a figurine value $500, right?
We were dismayed at the value of old books. These were in good shape, fully readable, many of classics still in print, and the appraiser averaged them at $3 each, adding, "Although that's humane. Most, you couldn't get even $2 for."
About all you can do is to keep an eye on antique books on ebay and see what others sell for, over a period of several months at least.
In the end, they'll probably be worth more to you to have than you could offer them for.
