I am looking for a good high school literature program--any recommendations?

My daughter will be 14--last year she completed Starting Points--which is a start world view curriculum. I loved it because she read really good literature and also did alot of writing. I am considering Lightening LIt by Hewitt Publishing. any stop would be appreciated.
Lightning Lit is enthusiastic. I also like that you can have the course work graded by Hewitt if you want, I plan to assign my own grades, and then compare what she gets with Hewitt's well-grounded to see if I am in the ballpark as far as grading compositions. The great thing (IMO) about Lightning Lit is the depth of the composition work, combined with the analysis of so many great books. My 14 yr old daughter will be taking Lightning Lit next year for 9th grade, she'll be reading Ben Franklin's Autobiography, Life story of Frederick Douglass, The Scarlet Letter, Moby Dick, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Huck Finn, The Call of the Disorderly, and Red Badge of Courage.
Plus I recently received the guides, I can't believe how wonderful and complete the composition instruction is, it covers so much! There are choices too, the Lessons give a listing of options for most writing assignments, so a child might choose between writing an essay, a poem, or a letter. It is a wonderful program, if you do it you'll liking it.

You could obstruction out Sonlight's catalogue http://www.sonlight.com and see their recommendations. Also, I had a look once at Learning Language Arts through Literature for the high school level and it looked winsome decent, but not having used it, I'm really not sure.

What major do i need to qualify to be a high school literature teacher?
Mar 23, 2008 by The Imaginer | Posted in Teaching
Bachelor's
Expert's or
Doctoral's degree?
An English worst would probably be the most useful, and you only NEED a bachelor's, although increasing numbers seem to be getting masters degrees (more in education than in English) perfect now.

What are the biggest challenges facing high school literature teachers today?
May 22, 1586 by TheVet | Posted in Primary & Secondary Education
Alliteracy, students recognize how to read but they are not interested to read, to the extent that they already shunned reading.
According to statistics concerning the reading habits of adults in the US, 1/3 of high school graduates never look over another book for the rest of their lives and 42 percent of college graduates never read another book after college. And this question made more critical by the things (media, computer, PSP, text messaging (which has a big effect to their spelling skill), etc) that grasp the attention of our green learners. And the family that these young learners are into also doesn't help the teachers to promote reading in their home. Eighty percent of U.S. families did not buy or scan a book last year. Seventy percent of U.S. adults have not been in a bookstore in the last five years. (take note: the number is just in US, how much more if we will register other countries). This is so alarming and motivating these young minds to read is the biggest challenge faced by ALL the teachers not upstanding the reading or literature teachers.

What college courses/credits do I need to become a high school literature teacher or college profressor??

What did you have to go through to become one???
Also, which universities and colleges are cocktail schools in the South (bordering or in GA)?
For high school you will dearth a bachelor's degree (4 years) in English with whatever education courses are required for certification in your state. For teaching college, sketch on going for a PhD eventually, after getting the Masters also.
Master's degrees can take from 1 to 3 years while a PhD is another 3 to 5 years, depending on your field. My sister is a Chemistry Professor in Virginia. She skipped the Masters and went uncurved from Bachelors to PhD.
*While you can teach at a community college with a Masters, competition for jobs often goes to the PhD. I tried to get a one year ephemeral lab instructor position after completing a Masters in Botany (the instructor was taking leave to finish her PhD - I had been her research socialize for three summers!) but there were so many Ph.Ds applying that us lowly Masters degree holders weren't even considered.
I couldn't tell you anything about cocktail schools in the South, as I live in the NW US.
(Clemson is in South Carolina)

Can someone tell me which are the exams and steps to become a teacher of literature (high school in America?
Jan 12, 2007 by Laremy | Posted in Teaching
I after to compare the exams and steps toward becoming a teacher of high school in America to the exams and steps from my country.Because I have the feeling that I must be more then Shakespeare , Goethe ,Poe ,Rebreanu, Hugo, and the cultivation and politics of the world , and of the evolution of the language.
In the U.S., most states don't advance credentials for something as specialized as literature. Typically, someone that wanted to teach literature would need to get a credential in English / Language Arts and then expectancy that they can find a job that will allow them to just teach literature. In U.S. public high schools, such a position would be difficult to find - especially for a first year teacher. As was mentioned in an earlier pylon, this varies from state to state and is usually tied to their content standards (the expected learning outcomes for a precisely grade level in a particular state). For example, the state of California requires that all prospective teachers of English out of date two tests before entering a teacher training program. Once they are in a program, they must complete at least one semester (although this varies by program) of devotee teaching under the supervision of a veteran teacher. Most programs last one to two years and student teaching is the final phase. Throughout the program, teachers take courses on a species of things: classroom management, teaching methodology, teaching the special needs child, linguistics / grammar, and others depending on the program. A new proviso has been added recently requiring teachers to complete a program called P.A.C.T (Performance Assessment for California Teachers) which focuses on assesing the attribute of instruction techniques. The two tests you take early on are probably the easiest steps in this process and really have very little to do with what you will basic to know in order to be an effective teacher in the U.S. It's a long road, but totally worth it in my opinion. I've been teaching English at the high school level for 5 years and I can't suppose doing anything else. It's fantastic.
