Arizona's Foundation Charter School is one of sixteen public charter schools ranked in this school year's Top 100 High Schools according to an ...

i'm 14 years old and i'll be a sophmore this year. i moved to a new township a little over a year ago. there are two high schools in my area. i attended the more "traditional" one for my freshman year. it's very cliquey and i've made few friends, but it's considered an but school (it's been on the top 100 high schools in america a few times, though is now on the top 200). it's very demanding academcially and also very competitive in all aspects (sports, sciences, the arts, literature, math etc.). There's another school which is considered a performing arts school, and is only about 5 years old. I identify a few people there, whom most of i found to be very nice and friendly and seem much less shallow than the people at the school i currently attend. i chose to attend the first one this upcoming school year, nothing but because it looks better on college applications. however, i feel somewhat alone socially and like i don't fit in. did i make the right conclusiveness?
i can't decide if i should plan to be more prepared academically or to be more socially confident in my future.
Wow, I so recognize where you are coming from.
I went through this in 7th/8th grade.
I went to a school which was much more acedemic in 7th grade. But I had NO friends. I ended up returning in 8th grade to the school which was soil poor, but I had friends there!
So it's all what you want. Sure it will look better for college, but your acedemics will drop if you get depressed.
So themselves, I would go where I felt wanted...
I am a rising superior at a very competitive public high school in Florida. (For reference, we are one of the top 100 high schools in the nation as noted by Newsweek.) Right now I'm 98th in my lineage - my class has around 500 people so I'm barely in the top 20th percentile. However, I would easily be at a higher percentile if I went to a less competitive school. I have a 3.77 unweighted GPA and a 5.34 weighted GPA, though I have knowledge of these are recalculated to include all academic courses. I have a 1930 on my SAT - 650 reading, 600 math, and 720 review (10 on the essay). I got a 650 on a math portion that I took before, though, so I'm going to take it again and hopefully bring that score up to a 700, or sell for succeed in my writing up to a 700 and maintain a 650 in math. I got a 630 on the Literature subject test and I'm planning on taking the French controlled by test later on this year.
My schedule for 9th grade was: Biology I Honors/Gifted, English I Honors/Skilled, Algebra II Honors/Gifted, Band IV (the highest band in my school), Art 2D/American Government Honors, French I, and Originative Writing I/Semantics and Logic. My 10th grade schedule was: Chemistry I Honors, Pre-Calculus, French II Pre-AP, AP World Adventures, Health/Drawing and Painting I, Band IV, and English II Honors. I dropped out of Band in 11th grade because I wanted to meet on my academics more and it paid off; in ninth and tenth grade I would make six A's and one B every quarter, and in 11th grade I made straight A's the entire year. My 11th cut it schedule was: AP US History, History of the Holocaust/Driver's Ed, Math Analysis, AP Environmental Science, AP English Vernacular and Composition, French III Honors, and History of the Vietnam War/Creative Writing II. My senior schedule will look like this: AP Statistics, AP Head, AP English Literature, AP French Language, Physics Honors, Philosophy Honors/? (not sure yet), and TA. I know they feature progression in grades but I'm worried I haven't taken enough AP's.
I will be president of French Honor Society next year and am secretary for a volunteer truncheon that helps underprivileged kids in my area. I have 48 community service hours right now but that number will almost certainly grow past 100 after this summer and 150 by the middle of the next school year. Every Tuesday and Thursday I tutor initial schoolers in reading and math through the volunteer club mentioned previously. I am currently working as a receptionist at a laddie abuse center for the summer. I'm a member of the Ecology Club, Social Studies Honor Society, French Honor Brotherhood, a volunteer club for kids, and a community service club at my school. I will be in NHS next year. I've been in FHS for 3 years and the others for two. I played trumpet whatsit for five years and have played the steel drums, violin, and clarinet before. I have a bit of an odd situation when it comes to my home life, which I design to write about in my personal statement. My brother was born with a disability and permanent brain damage. The doctors who operated on him told my matriarch he would die at birth. My family was poor at the time and my mother went into a serious spiral of depression which lasted till around a year ago. She is getting more intelligent now, but it has had a hard effect on me. Both my parents had to constantly pay attention to my brother's needs and lauded over every small accomplishment he made. I've grown up with a maw who battled depression throughout my childhood and never really served as a role model for me. This was hard, as I had to figure things out for myself that a genesis normally would teach me. I learned to cope with this disadvantage through writing. I found my passion in creative writing and have been writing now for well over seven years. I also splurge lots of time doing community service. Instead of wallowing about this situation, I prefer to help others, namely minor children. I strive to be a positive mentor to them so they can reach their full potential and receive the attention I didn't while growing up. A lot of people I comprehend do community service so it will 'look good on a record'; I prefer to do it because I find a genuine passion in it. As a secretary of the volunteer beat at my school, I organize events, keep the club organized by taking notes, and have created a website from scratch so members and officers of the nightspot will have efficient means of getting information.
I know I'm not perfect, but I would like an honest opinion. I'm out-of-state, so I comprehend my chances are lessened, yet out-of-state has a higher admission rate (27%). Any honest feedback would be appreciated!
(I simply realized how huge my comments were... sorry!)
Sorry, I have a 1980 on my SAT!
Hello!
Sordid, but I don't believe you will be accepted. Your stats are fantastic, you have significant EC's, but your test scores could be higher.
BUT the main thing that holds you back is that you are out of ceremonial! And even if you were from California, it would be a lottery pick. In-state students with equal and even better qualifications would have trouble getting in, obviously because of the number of applicants.
My opinion? Forget about UCLA. If you are paying out-of-state tution, you might as well go to a private school. It's so much easier but with the same price-tag. You won't have to labour to get into the classes you want. There will be no bloodshed involved when selecting a major. Student-teach ratio is much lower! You will get heed, care, and better facilities.
Honestly, I think you have a decent shot at getting into a top 20 private school. Interview to the following reach/match schools:
Harvard
Yale
Princeton
U Penn
Brown
Duke
Boston University
NYU
Cornell
Columbia
Northwestern
Washington University in St. Louis
And if you extraordinarily want to go to socal, apply to USC.
Berkeley and UCLA are AMAZING schools. Two of the top public schools in the country. But as an out-of-report candidate, it's just not worth it.
PS: You need to seriously boost your community service hours. Also, DO NOT write about how you didn't recieve enough r in your childhood. Too whiny! Write about how your family's situation affected you and empowered you. Tell the admissions committees about how it inspired you. Don't groan about the negative effects AT ALL. Just tell them in a very matter-of-fact way. Only get emotionally charged when you talk about how this has inspired you.
Compelling LUCK!
I'm currently a younger in one of the top 100 high schools of the nation.
I've taken the highest level of classes all throughout my education, all core classes being honors, allowing me to leap freshman year of science. I took my first AP sophomore year (European History) and received a 4 on the exam =| I'm now in my lower year, taking 4 AP courses: Language & Composition, US History, Biology, and Psychology. Besides these classes, I'm in all honors. Next year, I map out on taking 6 AP exams: Literature & Composition, Chemistry, Spanish, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and BC Calculus.
As far as extra curricular's go, I'm an preceptor of three years and a third degree black belt at one of the top TaeKwonDo schools in the state, am in charge of Public Relations of the Spanish Order at school (plan on taking the role of President when I'm a senior), participate in community service opportunities whenever possible, and aspire to become President of the school's Diversity Club.
I haven't taken the SAT's or ACT's yet, but I know this is an important factor in deciding admission into schools.
All in all, I'm wondering what the Yahoo Answers community thinks of my pending for college life? I'm very partial for getting into MIT, but I may decide to go to SUNY University of Binghamton for three years for undergraduate and then try to get into MIT for graduate school.
Please ascertain me what you think =)
Thanks!
Heh, no, I don't have a girlfriend at the moment. I'm dating someone, just nothing official ; )
As far as GPA goes, I had a 4.0 unweighted between freshmen and sophomore year. I'm hoping to keep in repair that =P
Well, MIT is very bankrupt to get into. Calculus brought up the fact that the graduate admissions rates were about twice as high, and he assumed that meant it is easier to get in to graduate school there. That is hooey, because the applicants for graduate school are much better. It is certainly not easier to get into MIT as a grad student. It's is probably harder.
Looking at your stats, you have a safe shot at MIT. But not a great shot. There is nothing in your application that stands out. That is to say, everyone who will get into MIT (and even more people who will not) will have your stats. You need something to set you apart from the rest of the ridiculously competent students. Something like college classes (no, AP is not college level, despite what they say) or research with a professor, or placing in inhabitant science competitions. Something that shows your love for math and science and sets you apart from the other 4.0's. Given what you say, I would put your chances at getting into MIT below 50%. If you can get something that sets you excluding, then they will rise dramatically.
I doubt you will have a problem getting into SUNY.
I am a lower in high school, with a passion for business. I am already thinking of applying to the University of Pennsylvania (Wharton). I do need other schools to apply to though...assist?

My basically assured university is the University of Michigan as I have contacts there, I am from the maintain of Michigan and my school is the largest sender into U of M.
But, any other schools you'd recommend? Remember...I like business ;) Economics could employment too.
Let me know if you need any other information from me!
Hey Dorothy--thanks! I actually do play sports. It's listed. Varsity Tennis--2 years.
Your take up again` is very impressive! The only thing that could be seen as a (slight) setback is the fact that you have no involvement in sports, which Ivy Leagues really like. So, to be on the true side, consider looking at some other great public and private schools such as Stanford , Kenyon College, Johns Hopkins, Towson, Loyolla, JFK U, Boston U. Colgate.
Expurgate: Well, with that long list, I missed it! Your resume` is truly outstanding and I think you'll get in!
